Initial Task
Your group will have two tasks. The first task is to be completed before we begin reading the novel. We must understand a bit about the time period during which the novel is set. You will probably discover some very interesting things about the proper decorum of young ladies and men. Your group's first task will be to research the expected behavior and dress for young people in the 1830s and compare and contrast those expectations to today's expectations for young ladies and men. You will compile your research and your instructions in an etiquette web site written and designed by your team.
Second Task
The novel is told from Charlotte's point of view. You have been asked to write another version of the novel in which the story is told from several other's points of view.
Your book will contain eight chapters:
An introduction about life on a sailing ship in 1832,
One chapter told by each of the following characters: Captain Jaggery; Zachariah; Mr. Keetch; and Mr. Crancick,
And a conclusion chapter that imagines what happens to Charlotte and the other main characters 20 years after the original story ends.
Finally, each group must design a cover and bind the book.
